CHAPTER 27

Alex

Anita cranes her neck and looks around the room. I think she’s checking to see if we’re alone. There’s nobody here except the two of us. “Well, Alex?”

She looks impatient, like she’s expecting me to agree to investigate with her right now. But I don’t know that much about her. Anita’s the one who reported the salt in the coffee, and then she pointed the finger at Mr. Pallett. All of a sudden, I’m not so sure he’s the one who’s responsible. What if Anita’s the one behind all this? I could be talking to a killer right now.

“I dunno. I better talk to Marquetta.”

“Why? All she’ll say is you can’t leave the B&B, right?”

Uh…yeah. But why is Anita so interested? If she is who she says she is, she should know the cops have already been over the room. There won’t be anything left. “Why do you wanna go there?”

“The police miss things all the time. You know that, right?”

I try to swallow, but my throat is dry. I’m getting super uncomfortable talking to her like this. I back away, but almost trip when I bump into a chair. Anita grabs my arm. Before I can call for help, Marquetta rushes to my side.

“Alex, are you okay?” Marquetta pulls me close.

I wrap my arms around her. My heart is pounding like crazy. I nod and give her another hug.

Marquetta looks straight at Anita and asks, “What’s going on here?”

“She bumped into the chair. I thought she was going to fall.” Anita gives me a little smile. “Are you okay?”

Now that Marquetta’s here, I feel a lot safer. I swallow and my throat’s not so dry. “I just tripped. That’s all. I’m fine, Marquetta.”

“Alex, you’re coming with me. We’ve got things to do in the kitchen.” Marquetta puts a firm hand at my back to guide me away. She looks Anita in the eye and adds, “If you’ll excuse us, I have to put Alex back to work.”

I’ve never been so happy to hear Marquetta say those words. When we get into the kitchen, she guides me to the island and points at my stool.

“Sit. Now, what really happened out there?”

I check the room to see if we’re alone. “Where’s Lydia?”

“She’s upstairs preparing the Mainsail Room. We were walking by the dining room when I heard you talking. Right now, I want to know what happened between you and Miss Jones.”

The truth is, I can trust Marquetta and my dad, but I don’t really know any of the guests…or Lydia. Maybe I should be more careful. Guess I should’ve thought of that before. “Me and Anita were talking with Tara and when Tara left, Anita said Mr. Pallett might have been the one who killed Mr. Nicholas.”

“Wait. What?” Marquetta stares at me like I’m crazy. “That makes no sense.”

“Anita thinks Mr. Pallett is one of those social…pathics. She was a spy, and she said he shows all the signs.”

“Are you referring to a sociopath, Alex?”

“That was it! Is that the same thing as a psychopath?”

“Not exactly.
